Three signs you need a career change

Changing your career or getting a new job can be a challenging prospect. However, the rewards of a change in professional direction that gets you on a long-term path to development, a good salary, and continuous learning and improvement far outweigh the drawbacks of writing your CV, submitting applications, and interviews.

A career change can include anything from choosing to move into another industry, looking to find a role at a higher level than your current one, or seeking a position that you have not previously performed but you are qualified for through additional training, qualifications or education.

Whilst we’ve all been frustrated by a colleague or had to work late occasionally, there are a lot of things in our jobs that we are willing to put up with if we know that the long-term prospects or the company culture are beneficial enough. However, there are several reasons why it might be time to move on from your current position and move into a finance position that better suits you.

You are no longer learning or being challenged

As we’ve mentioned, in Finance and Accounting there will always be days where you have to work late or feelsstressed because you need to hit a tight deadline;,however,if your days are predominately coloured by repetitive tasks or responsibilities that don’t challenge your abilities or help you learn new skills or competencies, then it might be time to consider looking for a new job, or considering a career change.

Being challenged by a role does not mean that every day is difficult, it means that every day your responsibilities engage your mind and require you to concentrate and apply your experience, ability to problem solve or work collaboratively with others. This higher engagement in a role has been linked to higher job satisfaction.

There are few career opportunities in your current role

Career opportunities include promotions or taking on more responsibilities within your current role so that you learn higher-level skills like team or project management. There are many times where you may find you’ve been in a role for two to three years and there’s no sign of a promotion in sight due to the size or corporate structure of your employer.

This can be particularly frustrating when it comes to applying for new roles when potential employers see that you’ve been in the same job for a long time without a title change or promotion. This can imply that you were passed over for promotions due to outperformance by your peers.

Finding a new role in a company that invests in you and your career with a clear line of progression and continuous development will help you learn skills and even leadership qualities that will stand you in good stead for years to come. This can sometimes be tricky to ascertain from a job description and application process but can be quickly assessed in the interview stage.

Your job is causing you too much stress

Whilst a little bit of stress can be a good motivator, too much can be very damaging to your long-term physical and mental health. If your job is too stressful and requires you to work well into your uncontracted hours and weekends, then you’re probably juggling too many things and should look for another role that has better support systems in place and a more supportive management structure.
